Whether you’ve been to the gynecologist before or it’s your first time, it’s common to feel uncomfortable even before you get to the office. But, like so many girls who’ve gone to the doc before you, you can definitely learn to calm yourself. Here’s how:
- Know what to expect. Talk to your mom, sisters or friends who have gone before. That way, you won’t feel like you’re entering the great unknown.
- Take the visit into your own hands. Prepare a list of questions and think and think about what you want to get out of it (aside from an exam). Easier periods? Birth control? Nutrition tips? Your doc will have the details. If you have some especially embarrassing questions, ask them anyway. Trust us, your healthcare provider can handle it.
- Take it easy during the physical exam. You may not want someone giving you a vaginal or breast exam, but it’s essential for your wellbeing. So try take some deep easy breaths, and listen to music on headphones if possible. Or, ask your doctor to explain different parts of the exam, so you know exactly what’s going on.
