Don’t worry; you’re not the only one who has to deal with haters. “Shake It Off” was probably one of the most popular songs of 2015 because pretty much everyone can relate to being criticized or put down by someone else. Some people just don’t like to watch other people following their dreams, and they will let you know. Maybe it’s a friend. Maybe it’s a frenemy. It could be a teacher or even a family member. Whatever the scenario, you are dreaming big, and they are raining on your parade.
If someone is telling you that your dreams are not worth it, that your ideas won’t work, or that you are not capable, you are not alone. Most people who have accomplished amazing things and driven great change in the world will tell you that they needed to learn how to block out others’ negativity. Even Kylie Jenner, whose app has more subscribers than any of her sisters’, has talked about being viciously bullied online.
Here are some tips for staying positive and keeping on track for your goals, even when there are haters in your path.
Surround yourself with people who care about and believe in you.
Whether you want to get straight A’s, dream of getting into a top fashion design college, or want to write your own screenplay, you are likely to have some ups and downs and late nights on the way. That is a totally normal part of the process. Keep real friends, family members, school counselors, and mentors around who will cheer you on and help you stay positive.
Stay focused on your goals.
Giving up on what you believe in is out of the question. Take steps to keep yourself organized and on track – set deadlines for yourself and ask for help if you need it.
Be flexible with the process and outcome.
There’s no way to know exactly what will happen or how all your efforts will pay off. Sometimes life might surprise you and take you in a different direction. You might end up deciding to choose a new path. Whatever happens, remember that your path to happiness and success is your own, and no one else’s.
